I have been eating what my mom referred to as a Pennsylvania Dutch version to this since I was a child. A bit of variation here, please bear with me. This version uses 1.5 lbs of ground beef, we use a 85/15 mix, but we get our beef from the farm. !st we fry one large onion and one large green pepper in butter and olive oil until translucent, then fry and mash the beef in that combination. At that point you drain the fat, then add 2/3 cup of brown sugar, 1/3 cup of white vinegar, and 1/3 cup of apple cider vinegar, 2 tablespoons of ketchup (sorry George), 2 teaspoons of mustard, 1/2 teaspoons of both salt and black pepper. Now you turn the heat down to a low simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring every 8 minutes or so. No bun preparation necessary, I prefer a potato bun, with a slice of cheese on top then bread and butter pickles, give the cheese time to melt somewhat. One of my favorite go to's, just throwing it out there, something a little different but AMAZING!!!!!

I’d like to see George tackle the Fleischkuekle. Many probably won’t know what this is, but this is the North Dakota staple on their take of a burger, sorta. It’s basically hamburger inside of deep fried dough. If anybody is curious about it google it and check it out!

Growing up in MN we would go to A&W(this was in the 80s) and they had what they called a swiss burger, it was a loose meat sammich and was amazing. Here's the copycat recipe I found for it Original Swissburger Recipe 5 lbs. Hamburger 1 cup yellow onion (minced) 1 tsp Accent flavor enhancer Seasonings 4 oz. Catsup 3 tsp. Mustard 3 tsp. Horseradish 3 tsp. Worcestershire sauce 5 tsp. Salt ¼ tsp. Pepper 1. Thoroughly mix catsup and seasonings in a 1-cup measure. 2. Add warm water to fill the 1-cup measure and then pour over the hamburger in the cooking pan. 3. Add 1-cup warm water. 4. Add 1-cup minced yellow onions and 1 tsp. Accent. 5. Stir for 15 minutes as it comes to a boil, then simmer for 25 minutes, stirring regularly. Cook it longer if it is too moist.

A few years ago, I was looking at Made-Rite's website. They were actually building a Maid-Rite in Wilson, NC. I couldn't believe it! I was 20 minutes away! I went the 1st day they opened. The place was packed. My sandwiches were great! The next time I went, there was hardly anyone there and sadly, they eventually closed. I guess NC wasn't ready for loose meat sandwiches but I'll always fondly remember my visits to Made-Rite.

As an Iowan *kicks the door down and poses for Corn Dominance* IT'S CALLED A MAID-RITE! Also I'm a Marshalltown Native! Taylor's is an INSTITUTION. For clarification, a big reason why Taylor's has the whole "Give you a side eye if you ask for Ketchup" is they actually make their Maid-Rites from Chuck Steak, and SURELY one doesn't put Ketchup on steak? And they actually have 2 cookers George, one where the meat is drained(If you ask for a Dry sandwich they give you this) and one where it isn't(if you ask for a Wet they give you one from there) Most locals always get Wet or Half-wet just for the extra juiciness.
